Panchang
Reading the Gujarati panchang
The Gujarati calendar follows the Vikram Samvat, which begins each year the day after Diwali, on Kartak Sud Ekam. Each lunar month has a bright half, Sud, as the Moon waxes to Poonam, and a dark half, Vad, as it wanes to Amas. A tithi is the time the Moon takes to move 12 degrees ahead of the Sun, so tithis vary in length, and the tithi at sunrise names the day. Every few years an extra month, Adhik Maas, keeps the calendar in step with the seasons.
